Poetry

I wandered the earth looking for a tree to teach me.

I performed kata beneath four, after first knocking at their door.

One said,

Stay rooted.

One said,

Breathe deeply.

One said,

Grow.

Another whispered,

Bend with the wind.

I listened well,

yet something was missing.

I tried to prove

that I could perform kata

and somehow find a blessing.

So I wandered along

a tarmac road,

searching for another tree,

wondering

what it might be told.

Then I saw a pole

and thought it was a tree.

"Hmm...

that's no good.

What can that teach me?"

I wanted to become

a tree,

a mountain,

a dragon

that never hides.

Then I heard

a whisper

from somewhere behind me...

"The beacon never knows who it helps."

The lesson came to me

later that night.

And now...

I no longer wish

to become

a mountain.

I no longer wish

to become

a dragon.

I simply wish

to be a beacon

and shine.

It shines because that is its nature.

Some travellers walk past without noticing.

Some find their way because of it.

The beacon is not responsible for their journey.

Only for keeping its light.
